Just wanted to say that I really appreciate @jman1954goat and i was happy when he signed up for the game :) I've always had fun playing with him. Wish I could say that in the main thread, but hope he will see it later

I know there has been an increase of people who are in favor of just doing a 24hr D1 but I prefer the standard 48hrs. It gives people time to get in the game and warm up a bit, I think the early shit posting phase is actually good and when people turn very seriously too quickly I always feel like its a detriment. And if you think its a crapshoot with who you are voting out on D1 in a 48hr day, imagine how bad it would be in 24hrs.

24 hours is very difficult with the array of timezones. I agree it also ramps up the crapshoot quality, and it probably makes our problems with voting the same people out again and again worse.

D1 is further only "useless" because we treat it like it is.

I agree with the considerations about D1, and I also don't think a no vote D1 is a solution either. It just extends the problem to D2, while giving mafia an advantage.

A lot of the things people don't like or call busywork - talking about the game, the structure, how to approach it - those are great tactics, actually. Helps people hammer out shared expectations and getting people to talk about the game/structure is a great way for teams to try to force errors from other factions. But too often instead someone tries this, someone else doesn't like it because it's not how they play, and then either that or other reactions to it devolves into argument, and then we're here.

Exactly. 48 hours allow people to settle in, shit post and all that and then get more serious later on. when it;s just 24, people feel more pressured to solve and like Monkey said it doesn't factor in different time zones.

This is something that's crept more into my mindset as I've gotten to know more players and played more games that I need to stay disciplined about. I wrote a big post about Zook and things I didn't like that he'd been doing...then gave him a pass for the day until the EoD wagons because he did some stuff similar in another game. Something to work on.

I just keep wondering when the last time was a meta read actually helped figure someone out vs looking at their actions in-game.

But from the sidelines it’s really obvious how many judgments and how much conversation is about meta now. I kinda wanna go moonlight around and read some games in other communities because I know it’s common but I wonder how it shows up elsewhere. Same way? Is it inevitable?

I think meta can help sometimes but is something we should resource to with caution. I only try to get meta reads from people I feel I've played enough with and can see some patterns in their play. And even then, it's something I only use in D1 if there's no other info to go off. When things start to get in motion, it's always best to focus on what people are doing in the game.

I like when people devolve into meta because it becomes obvious what narrative they want to propose. It's usually used as "This guy acted this way in this games so he probably has this role". It doesn't really tell a lot about the player they are talking about, but it does say a lot about themselves because they kind of reveal what their goal is. I always raise an eyebrow when they try to use meta to bus someone and puts them far up on my scum list.

Damn it's tough to read but very good to see the community actively going through the growing pains of reminding each other and themselves to stick to a higher level of discourse and language and to keep a positive vibe going even if it means cooling off and thinking some things through. (And I'm super sure there was no harm meant by Bojack but good to see Nin say it)

I do think meta does help with some players, there are definitely a few players that I feel like I have an OK handle on, but I try to avoid leaning too hard into it. I used to play poker with the same group of people every week for 10 years, you definitely learned individual tells. The better players would adjust from time to time and played with your expectations but they all had a, baseline you could work off of. I think meta needs to be part of the equation but it shouldn't be the biggest factor.

So I’ve thought about this a lot, and this will probably be my last time publicly talking about it, but I think what I’ve ultimately arrived at is if I saw someone say what I said to Jman I would tell them they have no business ever talking to someone like that. This isn’t something I’m planning on repeating in the future. I appreciate people telling me it wasn’t okay, because it very much wasn’t.

For SURE. It's very helpful sometimes. But it's really become a dominant tool, especially on D1, and I don't think it's helpful when sometimes it is the primary conversation. Or let me say this: I think there's a difference between the kind of meta you're talking about - really understanding how someone plays vs "idk they did a thing in this other game and so now they must be scum."

In - I think Nier? - someone pegged that I'm meaner as mafia sometimes and I wanted to push back on that because I think actually I get meaner/more frustrated when I'm trying to explain things that I feel are being ignored/misinterpreted/etc - but you know what? That tends to happen more when I'm mafia and lying. So the reason was not an accurate meta read per se (close). So what it's really about is understanding what's happening in the moment combined with understanding the person and their tells. Okay, monkey gets more upset when her arguments aren't landing - so what's the problem with the arguments here? Oh, it's that she's scum and they're bullshit lol.

Early in games, especially d1, there tends to be a lot of "well they did x in past and now y, so therefore z," which is fine and whatever until it leads to people getting locked into particular positions and not budging from them. So even then meta itself isn't the problem... just how we use it.

At least my kiddos had fun today. Really sorry I missed all of the day today. Dropping 5 inches in March IN MEMPHIS is unheard of and they wouldn’t let me do anything but take them sledding.

I feel really bad about my scum buddies. I hate to leave them high and dry.

oh hey bestie!! I didn't know that's where you are. My family's down in LR and Memphis is where I did all my hooligan shit growing up. The snow was really something; sledding was the only option.

that and if Zeke dies, two players were able to inherit his role which is why they weren't VT purely.
