Spectator Thread Home away from hell

I take it back, get out of here lol. <3

And how could you complain about Kate too? And what do you mean "that"? Are you telling me you didn't save her?

giphy.gif

Anyways, yeah, Monkey's game was good, there were some pretty good twists. Looking forward to any hot takes you have about this one once you get caught up. :)
I honestly thought Kate's was a thread that was going to last 'til the very end, so I opted to string her along a bit a couple of times. And I thought what I did do would've been enough to save her, but alas :x

And then someone else should claim.

And then they should just mass claim.

why is this relevant? lol

let's try not to comment too much on people's post counts, at least this early in the game.

Lol, it's not, I was just randomly looking to see if my post count on here was close to anyone's on Era, and it happened to be the exact same as Rac's.

This is a small game and this is how small games go

I'm kinda sorry I missed signups, I would had played it, just not in the mood of huge games.

You should read Bill and Ted if you are bored, it was a hell of a game with low post count

and I don't say this just because I had a good performance in it

well maybe just a little

Hopefully people will still want to play in future games I design/co-design. I think I might have taken the Madness part of Role Madness a little too seriously in this one.

There, Kits finally stopped beating around the bush at least.

She's lying. She's the Snitch and wants to get herself lynched. I never should have put that role in the game. Yes this is an open spoiler, I don't really care tbh.

Fanto

Honestly though, I think the role becomes less effective the further she lives, not more. In a 15 person RM game, there's probably going to be a mass claim by like what, D3 or D4? What use is it if they kill her after the mass claim goes through?

Unforced claims... Bad. I understand the weight of being a negative utility tho

I was just about to say this too.

Minor spoilers for other Town roles:

The Doctor was one of the best roles in the game. Any other Role Cop shot they could get right now, there's like maybe one or two other "must kill" roles in the game still that haven't used shots yet.

Verelios

This game is interesting because usually when you have so much dead air it becomes suffocating, someone starts talking just to read themselves post. And eventually they start pinging and replying other people until it snowballs into either catching so much aggro they get lunched or changing up their playstyle so they can get town together.

yeah it's a given in a role madness At least half the roles will be "filler roles", not everyone can be a cop or doctor sadly

I think maybe Elaine is trying to get scum to fakeclaim as the snitch?

Sorry for posting this all in the open btw and probably ruining things for people, I'm just feeling weird about the game right now, partially because of feelings about this role, and really needed to vent. And like I said, no one is really around elsewhere for me to chat with about the game.

I don't know, this game just has me kind of bummed out right now. I gave shitty roles to people and they're yelling at me or are clearly upset by them, discussion in the game thread is kind of being stalled out by gambits and it's only going to get worse, Town lost their roles to keep them safe from harm at night on D1 and N1. Scum's doing fine I guess, but they haven't exactly been sunshine and rainbows towards me either so far at times.
This is sometimes just how things go. But even without seeing the design I can say: have some faith in what y’all put together. People get frustrated in mafia for many reasons and they end up taking a lot out in the gamerunner because that’s really the only outlet. It’s not personal.

Fanto how are they yelling at you? Curious.
Also the design is fine, don't let them discourage you from creating other games.
Also ugh why remind me of Bill and Ted, I believe I played pretty well in that one, flawless tracker claim too, if it weren't for you turmoil and Nicole I would've gotten away with it.

Yeah, I'm trying to still look on the bright side and just hope everyone ends up having fun in the game even if they didn't like their role or something.

Just things said in PMs. I exaggerated a bit, but there's been some commentary made I suppose on what people think of their roles and how they are useless or weak. Just kind of makes me think about why I ever even put them in the game I guess.

Sometimes it's just how things are, not everyone will have an OP role, they must understand that. For your next game, I would suggest adding some mechanics if you want, usually people love those, depending on what they are.

Yeah, sometimes people will just have a bad time. Not everything will play out perfectly - but just ride it out and take solace in the people that enjoyed the game in the end. I’ve had some pretty rough times running games too, but you just learn to take the good with the bad.

Eh, useless roles are perfectly fine. Role madness games essentially require them to work in a lot of cases.

After kits claim I was leaning town on her, just because scum wouldn't come up with such a claim. I don't understand her reasoning though.

@Verelios nk is interesting, did you lay low on purpose? Was it because you gave of important pr vibes or to frame the kopite voters. If scum swerved away from sparks, why would they kill 1 of the 5 people on Kopite? Because they want me to believe exactly that?

Right now I'd say nin, rac and kits read town. mhm

I'm torn on swamped. I found her change to Kopite strange, but she actually had previous posts which signaled that opinion. She is logical and consistent so far, but she'd also be capable to do this as scum.

Maol insisting on the Stan read feels weird too. Being around day end and not choosing is scummy. Leaning more to the scummy side for him again, especially if he doesn't talk this/next phase. If the game wasn't so small I would also entertain a Maol/Stan mason relationship. Stan was strangely calm. But that's the opposite direction of my read entirely.

Zeke harping on Febe's vote is typical Zeke. Especially asking the same thing again after it was explained. This gives him ever so slight townie points. He's full diving into the Kopite voters, not sure what to think of it. If he's not considering anything else from the votes, he'd move up the suspicion ladder though.

They should consider how feasible is having both a miller and a snitch in a 15 player game, too much negative utility

Edit oh rac observed it but Stan dismissed the talk

I've been saying this for a while, yeah. I remember having to give a speech to people in Maple Street about the importance of voting early and often. I'm not sure how to counteract it. I think some of it is that people will say they are "worried about a turbo" so they don't want to vote until others have shown up to talk about things. The problem there is that no one shows up to talk about things, because there aren't things to talk about, because no one is voting, because they want more people to talk about things, but there's nothing to talk about, because no one is voting, etc.

I didn't read the posts, but hope you're feeling a bit better! And I wouldn't have as much stuff to like if you weren't here so forget about that.

In regards to early votes, I'm guilty of saving mine for close to EoD. The way I see it, there's some kind of "responsibility" in voting since you're depriving another member of the chance to keep playing. So I really want to be as convinced as possible, and for that to happen you need a lot of information. EoD is when you are at that point, the only con being the lack of time to revisit stuff. But then you can complete the circular argument with votes being good tools to get more information. Ugh.

Fun fact I believe my only early vote ever was on you in LB3.

Yeah, I'm just learning through experience that sometimes when you're the gamerunner you just need to sit back and appreciate the chaos. I obviously can't play my own game, so even though there are things where I think "Well, that's certainly not how I had planned for this or that to go!" I just need to appreciate that players are going to surprise me and that I should be looking forward to that haha.

As for your view of votes, I think you should start thinking of your vote more like a tool instead of a weapon. Yes, your vote can be used to take someone out of the game. Your vote can also be used in other ways though. Vote for someone just for fun if nothing is going on, see what their reaction is, are they jumpy, maybe a little too cool for school about it? Might be Scum! Or if someone does something that just instinctively reads as scummy to you, vote them and say why. Votes don't always need to be accompanied by huge read lists and mega posts. You can move your vote at any time, or you can unvote at any time too. People always react to votes as well, it gets people talking about things. Vote data is always useful to look back on in later days, see how a train got started, who jumped on who, when and why, or who decided to vote for Player A when Player B was also up for the vote. Things like that are all really important for Town, and they can't happen if everyone hangs on to their votes all day.

And as for voting for me early, that's a good call! If I'm Scum, I'm going to freak the fuck out if anyone votes for me, so my reaction could be useful in future reads on me! :)

I kind of want to run a Mini for my next game, before me and Melon finish up EZA and get that ready to go.

I've been floating around the idea of doing Before the Storm, the prequel to LiS, as a Mini game because it was shorter than the first game and has less characters.

I don't know what they saw in me to take the ninja shot. Probably perfection.

And Swamped voting for a 3 way tie at 10 minutes is too suspicious to ignore. I've been thinking about it and even if I thought Kopite was scum there's no way rational town would make EOD that messy.

Brexit 2 was just a scum disaster. Myself and Sophia were super unmotivated to play and we had an absent team mate I bussed for no good reason on day 1.

Then we killed Fanti night 1 just for a laugh despite him being our biggest ally on town.

Bad scum play superceded all design issues there.

This game is fantasticly designed and all the roles are great. Fanto did a terrific job.

I'm in the same boat Reki, hell part of what Chuggs was using against me when he was trying to convince town we were scum was because of my lack of voting due to sleeping through most of the turbos. I was trying to always get a vote down before going to bed the night before a EOD, but those times I assumed we wouldn't actually turbo at least until everyone had discussed things properly.

In the future I'm going to try and be better about voting earlier and trusting some of my scum gut reads (not all of them lol because i scum read two townies) and hopefully that won't get me killed. XD

I'll never forget the end of D2 in MafiEra. That unique set of circumstances we were under, where we could only make 30 posts each and our first votes were locked in, people were running low on posts with like an hour to go, Bae claims, Fran tells us he's not going to use his override, you claim, Flux counter claims, people waffle around with votes, then finally Fran overrides you. Holy fucking shit, best day end ever lol.

I think the problem I'm seeing with Febe is that everything he's posting is very convenient. Like I said, he had a good reason for the D1 vote to break the tie, set up for voting Kop before day end and even his launch on Kits isn't new. It just feel calculated, if that makes sense.

Still disliking Mao's play, but that's NAI. And I actually liked his points about malus. He's painting a target on his back with all the "I won't tell yet" though.

Unrelated general question, do you think flavor influences the way you perceive the "vibe" of a game? Or is it just the players/actual content? Asking because Maple Street felt a bit somber in comparison to other "upbeat" games, if that makes any sense.

To be fair you got a lot of town reads due to general activity and effort, so almost the only way to kill you was at night. But then you scared Chuggs with the potential vigilante claim.

Fireblend always reads towny to me, but I believe it makes sense to pick Kitsunelaine. I wouldn't think it's a good idea to try to uncover and lunch town just so mafia doesn't know one PR is in the game.

The flurry of votes for Mao is interesting but I can sympathize with people there.

Perfect opportunity for mao to show us some of his work but I guess that's not happening? At this point it feels like he's more preoccupied with looking stoic and cool under pressure than playing the game.

I think it's usually a player thing, some playstyles tend to clash I suppose, which is probably why larger games can get a bit unruly at times with lots of different playstyles converging.

Yeah that post kind of rubbed me the wrong way when I saw it. I agree with Verelios' comment that all of his moves seem extremely calculated. I'm also finding it interesting that Sparks is agreeing with a lot of his comments, but that could be because Sparks latched onto his opinions.

Him questioning both rac and KIts' role talk makes sense from a players perspective but it also feels like someone trying to take advantage of easy targets, kind of like with how he's handling Mao.

think it's more players and the actual content than the flavor of a game. i believe it also has a lot to do with how active a game is but it still plays in to the style of the players involved. for players i've seen folks get discouraged with a low post game, making their posts not as engaged, leaving others not engaged, leaving less activity, etc in a weird cycle.

same goes for gamerunners too. i've noticed a lot of gamerunners (myself included) feel like a game doesn't do well when it isn't active even if the players involved are having a good time.

but i've also seen quiet games where everyone had fun and it was fine????

games are chaos

As a gamerunner having a game with low post count would be a failure for me, it always depends on the players too of course, you might get 20 LP's(nothing against LP, but it's well known he doesn't post a lot). I don't mean a game like this with 15 players, but a game with 20+ players, like I don't remember how many players console wars had but it was definitely a failure, and it wasn't Nin's fault at all.

I guess the main discouraging thing for me with the low activity is just worrying that people aren't having fun with the game. It also just generally worries me when people don't check in for over a day.

Some people are just lower activity. Doesn't have anything to do with how much fun they're having or not!

Some people are also just keeping up with the thread but they got nothing to say so they keep quiet. I may have had the largest post count in my game, but there were plenty of times I had nothing to say and was quiet. XD

True, I guess for me when I have nothing to say I'll usually just talk about how I have nothing to say, just so I have something to say lol. :P

Despit the fact that I post a lot (you can tell by how many messages I have on here for only a three month year old account) I always try and be as concise as I can so I only talk when I feel it's relevent.

Usually I fail but what can you do.

Oh nice, finally some action!

Was going to say I'd be onto Mao as well, because I expected him to hunt much more if he was town. Maybe his time is now.

Rewind!

Well that pretty much confirms Mao for town, we'll see how this goes though. :O Things definitely did get interesting.

Rac and kits as town
Mao probably, let's see the action

Nin going total afk after this D1 doesn't feel good.
Stan gets a town lean.

Fireblend is scum #1, his posts are too clean. The fire is missing.

I'm having difficulties drawing connections though. He is constantly painting swamped in a good light.
Sparks could be a partner.

This leaves Aeleus, Malus and B-Dubs. There could be scum there.

And almost forgot melon. She's a bit uncooperative and brief in her posts, but that fits what I remember from Brexit, would have her as null.

Having a hard time with Zeke. Would've expected more activity.

cabot

Why.
melons vote on mao is bizarre, mao can prove his role the next phase as he said it was once a day. It's also really powerful for scum to have.

Neutral isn't impossible I guess, but its still a stretch.

Thanks for the ping Gorlak. That was a frenetic bit of time there trying to decide what to do lol
Haha, no problem :)

Finally there is some spice in this game and Fanto goes zZzz

Mao is a clear cut case of if he survives the next 3 nights, we might have to lynch him. I actually like how Malus argues now. Melon overreacting much? Mhm.

If mafia is that ballsy on this forum when there's already a miller claim out, I'd be supremely impressed.
What is this? What has a miller claim to do with mafia faking sth.? I'm not following the logic here, is this too much info?

Do you really believe his claim completely? Unlimited sounds absurd. He's definitely leaving something out. That being said, I think he's town.

Seems like commentary on other communities not being so gung ho with fake claims at once more than anything.
