Hello Gang!

@Chuggernaut I think the game specific rules (29 - 31) are accidentally copied from ghost trick mafia or are they also used in this game?

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
Hey, scum gang - I'll be your goon. This is my first scum roll, so feel free to bus me if I show any signs of blowing my cover.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
Iaoni might be one to watch. It's early days, but coming straight in with a mechanics post could mean she's a keen solver.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
For what it's worth, I've been thinking about the roll myself. Taking Hedin into consideration, at the very minimum we're looking at TTTM???, so there's space for a few more PRs. If there's an SK, then we might just have one strong PR in the room, at the expense of having a total wildcard in the mix.

Agreed. I'm not sure yet if the mechanics talk makes her more likely to be a PR or not. With only an IC confirmed there's not that much info to be gained, however if she's a PR the setup is already way more restricted lending itself to speculation. On the other hand if you're a PR you maybe wouldn't want to discuss it in the thread for fear of slipping up and giving it away.
Could still be a good target for a role block.

Yeah, I wouldn't read much into whether or not she has a role from her discussion. If she's a keen observer, though, she might be able to mesh her roll analysis with PoE, so that might be the biggest threat.

On the flipside, if laoni's deductions lead her in the wrong direction and her suspicions are off-track, she could be a useful town leader, at least early on. I can't see town going after her yet - especially as a newcomer - but if she's still in play after a day or two and her logic looks like it's serving her well, then she could be a high priority hit if nobody else looks dangerous enough.

If there's an SK about, I wonder if they might go for Hedin? Town won't give him the boot, and he doesn't pose a PR threat to us beyond making up town's numbers. That would probably put him near the top of an SK's hitlist. Pure speculation, of course, but one to watch with the overnight flips.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town

It's admittedly, why I didn't share everything I had done analysis on, just the stuff that's plainly obvious.
Mm, I had a feeling that laoni was holding something back. There's no telling what else she's thinking of yet, but she's definitely not one to under-estimate.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
That it would. I've no desire to kick the hornet's nest with Sophia at the moment - if I end up for the chop and she's still after laoni, perhaps it might be worth floating the suggestion that all that talk about being careful with mechanics posts was me trying to coach laoni? Bit of a stretch, but you might be able to win a few people like Sophia over if you play it right.

Yeah, don't put pressure on Sophia, let's try to keep you afloat as long as we can. But that's a great idea, we'll keep that in the back pocket just in case.

Okay, since we’re getting to the middle of day 1, I wanna start breadcrumbing my fake claim as we get close to the end. I wanna take Cable, but we 100% need to craft something for malus to claim town role blocker. Storm or Cable are going to make the most sense for that… Actually, we could use Storm to do that, since her powers could lean into flavor text of “her control of the weather allows her to block others from using their powers” or something like that.

Actually, let’s take a look at that format math laoni ran and play off of it, set ourselves up for success and try to get some of the real power roles offed. Take advantage of the fact that we have recognizable mutants that we can build batcrap insane powers for. Might get us killed faster if we pull the trigger too early, but it’d be a hell of a lot of fun if we long-con it, only show our hands when pressed, and if we get away with it…. Hoo boy!

Okay, so Cable would, in theory, be a one-shot vig. That would fit into the math no problem and makes sense because he's an anti-hero. Storm can, of course, be the roleblocker, and that doesn't mess with the math, since we obviously got that. Captain Britain will need to be the Betsy Braddock incarnation since we're doing Krakoa; not sure what to do with that, probably vanilla? Also doesn't break the math too much. Thoughts?

I don't think we need to match powers to characters. Isn't C9++ random assignment anyway?
As for the power, I think Doctor wouldn't be a bad claim for the start since it could be got with a single D roll and if we already have a Doctor, rolling 3 Ds isn't too far fetched either.

malus

Claiming a 1-shot role is a bit more dangerous, because a counterclaim immediately leads to a thunderdome.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
I'd largely be OK with that, except that I'd be wary of using a one-shot vig claim unless there's no alternative. If there's a serial killer in play, then it's possible that the roll might have been TTTMVVV, in which case there'd be a one-shot vig around to counter-claim. Since there can't be two of them, that'd get sunk pretty much a straight away.

Storm makes sense as a fake claim for malus, if pushed for flavour he could spin it as something to do with atmospheric interference.

Regarding laoni - we do have a small advantage over her in that we know that either three or four of the seven slots came up as T, so there can't be more than four PR slots, at least one of which rolled M. The best outcome for us in terms of town PRs would be that there's no serial killer, which would add a fourth T and only leave two slots unknown. In that case, town would only have two PRs beyond Hedin. If there's a serial killer, however, town could potentially have three more PRs that we don't know about.

Fair enough, didn't want to do anything without consulting the both of you. C9++ is random assignment for the roles in play, but I'd be shocked if they didn't pick names after the RNG gave them the power rollout. Going dark since it's 1am out here.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
How are we feeling about where to look tonight so far? It feels like there's a small chance that myself or malus could get red-checked or hit if Stu or Faddy are cops or vigs. Sophia's had her concerns about me, but I don't think I'm at the top of her hit-list just yet.

For the kill, I'd be tempted to go down the low info flip route myself, since we don't really have anything to tie on anybody apart from Hedin at the moment. nin or Zipped could work there, depending on how much they add later today. Zook might also be a possibility, plus getting green flipped after making positive comments about me earlier might boost my town cred a smidge - I think that might be a riskier route to go down, though.

No idea - the only Killian I know's the bad guy from The Running Man.

For what it's worth, my flavour name's Omega Sentinel, which sounds pretty generic.

So far the high posters don't seem to be onto us all that much, so best to let them tear into each other a bit longer.

I may be pushing you a bit @Alexem. Hopefully not too many people jump on that but it should at least create some distance between us.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
I'm not going to keep up with this Faddy point any more if I can help it, but if I do get picked out in the next couple of phases, it might be possible to float the idea that I was trying to cover for him and laying it on a bit too thick.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
I'll need to vote in the next hour or so, as I'll have a few things going on after work this evening and it'll be fairly late by the time that I get home. I would have voted for nin, but as Stu mentioned, it's kinda shifty voting for somebody who might be inactive for IRL reasons. Zipped might be risky if he's starting to get dubious about roll talk, considering that I was talking with laoni about that earlier.

All things considered, then, I'll probably vote for Zook. Nobody's really after him, so I don't think it'll pick up much traction, but it's the kind of vote for a possible under the radar player that I'd usually go for on D1. I'll probably avoid switching to wagons towards EoD if at all possible, as it might look out of character for me - it'd probably make Faddy and Stu suspicious at the very least.

Catching up now.
I don't know the flavour at all, does Killian Devo (my real flavour name) match a Roleblocker?
Yes, he's basically in command of the Sentinals in the current run, so in a leadership-type role. It was probably picked with Godfather and roleblocker in mind.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
This... isn't exactly an ideal situation, is it? We could do with another candidate coming through the middle.

As things stand, if either malus or I go, I have a feeling that there's going to be PRs sniffing at the other.

No, this is not. I'd like us to at least get past Day 1 without any casualties. Though if we are indeed in a "too many PRs" situation, then we're going to be hard pressed getting passed Day 3 based on our Day 1 play.

I wonder if I should just claim Roleblocker. Seems it's pretty quiet and I probably won't stay around for EoD.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
Hmm... Hawthorn and Zipped would both be useful trains to get on at the moment, but I don't think I could get away with joining them without looking more whiffy than I already do. Going with Hawthorn would be an about face after my mild defence of her in the discussion about her shading Faddy, and voting for either of them would invite accusations of OMGUS.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
I wonder if I should just claim Roleblocker. Seems it's pretty quiet and I probably won't stay around for EoD.
The chances of having a town blocker are lower than other PRs - there's a 5% chance of a slot rolling B against 15% for C or 10% for the others. That said, a counter-claim would make things dicey, as if somebody else claims blocker, then people are going to start considering the possibility of a BBB roll. Even if they can accept the small odds of that happening, as the game goes on that roll will end up looking up less possible.

I'd say do it if you think there's a significant chance of a mis-hit, just be prepared for the outside chance of getting thunderdomed at some point.

Alexem, I'm voting you, I'll pull off if we're getting too close; gotta build some conflict between us so they don't catch on.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
Alexem, I'm voting you, I'll pull off if we're getting too close; gotta build some conflict between us so they don't catch on.
Yeah, I'd been planning on throwing what I'd have thought would be a safe vote your way earlier before things started kicking off. Fingers crossed you can get away with your Hawthorn vote and have it go somewhere.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
Will have to give that some thought later. One thing that I'll say for certain - I think it'd be best for you to call in the kill, Lux. I think there's a good chance that whatever PRs are out there will be sniffing in my direction.

That's a real shame about malus, though, I really thought that town might have swung towards Hawthorn at the end. In a bigger game, or at least one where there are more people around for EoD, I think there'd have been a fair chance of that happening.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
I've been giving it some thought during my yoga class this morning - I'm leaning towards bumping off Faddy tonight to see if that keeps the spotlight on Hawthorn. If malus was still here, If have suggested blocking Stu, but I think he'd be a risky kill.

After I've had my lunch, I'll put down my thoughts about the players.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
OK, let's run through the room:
  • Hawthorn: Hawthorn's had some interest in her, particularly from that exchange with Faddy. It's certainly notable that she was the runner up today, although the last vote was yours and the one before that was from Sparks, so I don't know how much stock the others will take in that. Hedin's already considering the possibility of her bussing malus, though, so that's got to be worth something.
  • Sophia: Mostly focused on laoni so far. Hard to say if she'll keep tunneling her, but it shows how tenacious she can be - we could do without coming on her radar! If it comes down to her and laoni down the line, I can see people taking laoni's side over hers, but it's early days yet. Worth bearing in mind that Sophia could potentially be pushed into going after Sparks.
  • Hedin: Essentially vanilla for all intents and purposes. Notably the only player to put a vote on you so far, but looks to be more interested in Hawthorn at the moment. If Hawthorn comes under more pressure, he could be useful for leading the charge. Could be a nuisance if there's a SK who targets him early doors.
  • Stu: I think Stu could be dangerous, at least for me. We've played together a few times, so he stands a good chance of meta-reading me if I act too out of character - he's clearly already suspicious of me. If he's a cop, I'd say there's a good chance that he'll red check me fairly early, and if he's a vig then I might not see D2! However, given he's already put the finger on me, killing him could well be taken as OMGUS by town. It could potentially be spun as scum trying to shade me, but I don't think that I'm town-read enough to pull that off. As I said this morning, I think he'd have made a good target for malus, but killing him could end up turning up the heat on us.
  • Zook: Has been pretty quiet so far, also appears to be largely null read. Probably my most open advocate so far, although that might change after my vote. If he'd been better read by town then he might have been worth trying to pocket, but if he doesn't join in more, I could see a train starting on him. I'm not planning on actively pushing for him to go tomorrow, but I'll try to stay distant enough to justify voting for him again if a train ends up taking off.
  • Laoni: For obvious reasons, I wouldn't want to kick a newcomer on N1. Hard to know what to make of her so far - I'm mostly certain that she's an eager vanilla townie, but the possibility that she might be a PR working out where to aim can't be denied. She doesn't seem to be after us so far, though, so I don't think it's time for her to go just yet - especially if her presence can be used to shade Sophia. One thing that I will say about laoni, though - if she turns out to have rolled SK, I wouldn't put it past her to have a good exit strategy.
  • Zipped: Quiet for the most part, but came back in the second half. The only player to have a lasting vote on me, but I think that came largely out of my suggestion that he was trying to lie low. Hard to say if that was out of feeling that I was setting him up due to IRL unavailability (not the case, but a reasonable thing to be worried about), plain old OMGUS or if he really is dubious of me. In any rate, taking him out now would probably turn too much attention in my direction. Certainly one to watch out for, though.
  • Natiko: Nothing to go on at all. Would make a perfect no-info flip, of course, but it'd be hideously unfair to Natiko, so we can rule him out as a target out of fairness. I'll say this, though - he's come after me in the past (although he was scum on a couple of occasions), so if I do come under more scrutiny, there's a reasonable chance that he could suss me out. One to watch out for.
  • Sparks: Maybe it's me, but it feels like Sparks has been a bit more insightful than usual. Granted, he's still fairly erratic, but I think he's making an earnest effort. He does tend to be a town-on-town magnet, though, so unless he shows any danger signs, it might be best to wait for town to turn on him. Sophia may well lead that charge if Sparks gets her hackles up any more.
  • Faddy: The most memorable Faddy bit from D1 was, of course, his exchange with Hawthorn. Getting green flipped would probably put some more eyes on her insinuating that he was role fishing. I have to wonder if he was, to an extent, but from a PR's perspective? It's hard to know so far if he has a role, but if he does, it could be risky for us. He doesn't seem to have come out hard against us - he seemed surprised that Stu was suspicious of me - but he did point out your post where you said to keep an eye on me. Might he already have ideas that we're in cahoots? Like Stu, I think Faddy would stand a good chance of rumbling me if I acted too out of character. I also think that if he's a PR, he's good enough at keeping his cards close to his chest to aim at a target that he doesn't appear to have paid much attention to during the day.
With all that in mind, I'm thinking that two possible options would be:
  • Take out Faddy and try to get people suspicious of Hawthorn.
  • Take out Sparks and try to get people suspicious of Sophia.
Of the two, I have a gut feeling that we'd get more out of turning up the heat on Hawthorn. She's already attracting suspicion - particularly from Hedin - so would Faddy getting green flipped make it look like she was trying to shade him, rather than mis-reading his intentions with regards to claiming? It would also help if he does turn out to have a PR that he might be tempted to aim our way. Sparks would be a decent low-info flip, but I don't quite think that the room's ready to turn on Sophia. If she keeps going after laoni, though, there's a chance that might change.

Sounds reasonable to me; let’s take out Faddy. Sparks is more reasonable than normal, but is still chaotic enough to keep around a little bit longer thanks to the noise he makes.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
Agreed on Sparks, I think it'd be worth seeing if town get dubious of him. If we're agreed on Faddy, go ahead and give the command when you're ready!

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
Just in case Lux is away between now and when the actions lock, I'm going to put the command in now:

KILL: Faddy

Lux, if you're here before the deadline, please replace my command!

Great - fingers crossed, then!

Lux - I'll probably be a bit late checking in tomorrow, but things usually go slowly on a Sunday anyway. Sunday's about the only day of the week where I don't have to get up early, so I sleep pretty heavily through most of the morning!

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
Just had a look before going to bed.
  1. Will it look like Hawthorn and Faddy took each other out?
  2. We've either got a vig or an SK. An SK might have helped if we still had a full team, but after malus flipped, they'd probably try for a town win first.
  3. I have a bad feeling that Sophia's rumbled one of us. And it's probably me.

So we've either got a SK, or odds are good that they actually rolled a town vig, which has unlimited shots. I see zero reason to fire off your only shot on night 1. C9 also allows multiple vigs, so if they have a second one, they're probably a one-shot.

Yeah, an SK is gonna be more of a liability at this point than a help without malus. I wouldn't rush to Sophia being a cop just yet, she's claiming Wolverine, the vig of vigs. Our plan might have worked a bit too well.

Damn. Town cop claim. Odds are very good that you’re right, she’s got one of us. The third option is that she got the SK, which is what I’m hoping for now that we don’t have any PRs.

To clarify, since I just realized that could be read multiple ways, that third option is Sophia read the serial killer’s ID. I’m hoping that’s what it is, at least. Let’s let it play out a bit before we do anything rash one way or another.

A long shot possibility is Sophia is the SK and Logan’s her fake claim. Not impossible; we did get Storm and Cable after all.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
OK, let's think about the slots that are free. We know that at least four of them are:
TTTM
That leaves either three or four slots, depending on whether or not there's an SK.

If there is an SK, then the roll could potentially be:
TTTMCCV - Unlimited cop, one-shot vig
TTTMCVV- Unlimited vig, one-shot cop
I don't think the latter's as likely - an unlimited vig might not shoot every time, but I think they'd feel it's safe enough to have a go on N1 when there are more players still in the pool. In that case, if there were an SK and an unlimited vig, then I'd have expected to see three players go out overnight, not two.

If there's no SK, then that would leave only two slots. However, to pair the extra kill with Sophia's claim, it would have to look like:
TTTTMCV
That would mean Sophia and the vig are both one-shotters. Would they really both blow their shot on the first night without a clue on where to aim it?

All things considered, then, I think it's far more likely that there's an SK about and, if there is a vig, they'll be a one-shotter. Assuming Sophia's claim is true, then we're looking at:
TTTMCC?
The only possibility that we can rule out for that last slot is M, otherwise Hedin would have been a mason instead of a child. So, town must either have a one-shot cop or vig, or an unlimited doctor or blocker up their sleeve.

Out of necessity, I think we're going to have to off Sophia tonight, as we have to assume that she's an unlimited cop. The risk is that the last slot's a doc, in which case they'll be almost guaranteed to protect Sophia tonight. If it's a blocker, then they'll have to work out who'll be calling in the kill, so they could make a mistake.

All in all, things are looking very bad for us right now. We might stand a slim chance of getting through this if Sophia's caught the SK, otherwise I think I've looked too shifty. If I'm red-checked, then I don't think it's going to make any difference if you bus me or not, just as long as you don't look over-eager to vote for me.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
If push comes to shove, I suppose that I could claim town roleblocker if I get red-checked. It won't last long, and it probably won't save me from getting pushed, but it's the least likely option to get counter-claimed. If I claimed one-shot cop, the immediate question would be why I used my shot on N1, which wouldn't stand up to scrutiny.

I'll have to wait and see what Zook's planning to claim before I even consider doing that, though. If he claims a PR, then I don't think there's anything that I can say to get out. That said, if he claims vig, I could suggest that he's the SK. It won't help, unless nobody thinks to mention that SK!Zook would want to help town to get his win, but it would probably be the only trick available to me.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
Come to think of it, there's another option - I fake counter-claim Sophia, give Zook a green check (which I can pass off as following up on my suspicions from D1) and try to thunderdome us. It won't keep me in the game, but it might keep the heat away from you and could make town question Zook.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
Uh-oh. Didn't see that coming, Lux. Going to give it some time so that it doesn't look too opportunistic, but I think I'm going to have to bus you for safety's sake. Honestly don't think that I'm going to last much longer solo, but I'll do what I can.

Tonight - since I can see a turbo coming - I'll have to bump off Sophia out of necessity and hope that there isn't a doc around. (If that's what Zook's going to claim, I'll have to take him out first.) Then I'll just have to see if I can avoid the SK's attention as much as town's. By my calculations, I'm more or less going to have to hold on until D4 and win a mis-hit and lose shoot out, which... seems tough. We've just been seriously unlucky in this game, no two ways about it.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
Actually, I might as well get the vote in now, just in case people think it's odd that I'd vanish right after replying to Zipped - I'll just have to remind the room not to hammer before Zook's had a chance to speak up.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
Scrub that - after seeing Hedin's post, I wonder if somebody might dispute Sophia's claim? Doesn't seem likely, but let's not act too quickly.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
Well, that's that. No idea what the bit about denying scum info's going to do to my credibility, but if you're toast, Lux, I think it would look a bit better to be on the train than off it. It'll probably get sussed out sooner or later, but I'll see where the risk gets us.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
I'm also considering shooting Zook tonight, just in case he's about to claim something that's going to cause even more trouble. If he's a doc, then it stands to reason that he'll protect Sophia. If he's planning a claim to cover being the SK... then that's not so good. I don't think I'm high up on Sophia's list, but then again I would never have guessed that she'd have checked you, Lux. It's also possible that the SK might want to shoot Sophia in case she blows their cover - if we were to both shoot her, a doc couldn't save her from that.

There is zero way I’m getting out of here at this point, I didn’t do enough poking at Sophia to be able to make any defense under threat of a Turbo. Best bet is for you to get on the bus and hope that the SK is able to lay low enough to pick off a few more. Best of luck!

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
Good thinking with the flavour! No idea if it'll change anything, but it's worth a shot. I'll have to keep my bus vote in place for the sake of distancing, but anything that might give town pause is worth mentioning.

Oh, it’s not changing jack. I’m totally still gonna get turboed, I would event believe myself over Sophia at this stage of the game. But I am absolutely gonna take someone down with me and get them as far away from you as possible, haha.

So, uh, who did I investigate last night? ;)

Might as well get more shade and side eye going there on the way out. Go ahead and grill me, I’m a dead man walking after that play.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
Yeah, I don't think we're going to find out who runs Bartertown on this one. Still, it's probably what I'd have done!

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
Assuming there are no other cops around - and there could be a one-shotter - then I think the order of priority for night hits would be Sophia, followed by Hedin. I can't afford to have any more green checks around by endgame if I make it there, otherwise PoE will do me in.

Gonna do my best to take some strong players with me, best of luck, it should be clear to the others I’m borderline playing open wolf right now.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
As actions are about to lock, I'll make a note of this for readers at the end of the game - I don't know what Zook was about to claim, but my strong suspicion is that he might be a doc. I did consider hitting him on the off-chance, but I felt that taking the risk on Sophia was the better bet. If Zook isn't a doc, or if he is and the SK wants to shoot Sophia as well, then I'd have missed a chance to stop Sophia from green checking another player.

Of course, if Zook's a blocker or a vig - or even the assumed SK for that matter - then the whole thing's moot. Anyway, that's all for now, I'll see how things have shaken out when I get to the office in the morning.

Alexem

Yeah, I'm town
Yep, I'm cooked. They might not get me today, but I'll be top of the list tomorrow and I don't think that there's any way that I can prevent that.

Let's look at the new info - Sophia was a one-shot cop (damn), so she only takes up one slot. Stu and Zipped can't be in cahoots unless their claim is true, so added to Hedin, they all take three slots together. Knowing that the scum lineup can only be TTT or TTTT, that rules out TTTT, otherwise the masons wouldn't fit. That means:
  • The final roll must be TTTCMMM
  • Sparks must be lying about being the roleblocker, so he must be the SK.
I might not be able to win for scum, but I can at least try to beat the neutral. I'll try to either sweat Sparks into getting voted out today, or I'll kill him tonight.

No, wait - if town figure out that Sparks is the serial killer, they'll protect him and use him as a vig. In that case, I've got to take the heat off of Sparks, survive for the day and whack Sparks overnight. After that, they'll almost certainly give me the boot - they won't vote out Hedin and probably won't touch Stu or Zipped, so that just leaves myself, Laoni, Natiko and Zook, depending on who goes out to day. Out of the four, I'm the whiffiest by a long way, so that'll be where the game ends.

That said, reading on, I think they're all being a little hasty in assuming that Sparks is telling the truth. I don't want to go full on j'accuse with him, but if I can make the room lose trust, they might read any attempt to claim SK as a scum gambit.

Yeah, I'm town
There it goes. Either I put a big hole in Sparks' credibility - will a swerve to an SK claim be believed if he's already fake claimed - or I go down in a blaze of glory. (Or a blaze of embarassment, it's happened before.)

Yeah, I'm town
Laoni has, incidentally, reminded me of the other complication - if Sparks chose to be BP, then I can't shoot him and I'm not going to make it to N4 to get him then. I think it's today or never.

One more post before I close this thread and get on with my work - I just want to add that Laoni's played a blinder in this game. Her roll analysis has been very helpful for keeping town on track, and it's all lead her to crack the final roll very efficiently. I don't think that I'd have thought of the explanation that last night's kill effectively rules out the possibility of having a godfather so quickly, so that gave me the bit of leeway that I needed to put the squeeze on Sparks.

Back again, since it's quiet - yes, it does occur to me that town could turn the tables on me and go with the 'how are you so certain there's no godfather' angle, accusing me of sheeping Laoni's post (which wouldn't be entirely wrong). Like I said, blaze of glory and/or embarassment.
